The city of Elgin was created by the Houston and Central The city of Elgin was created by the Houston and Central Texas railroad commission, in 1872. The town is named after the railroad commissioner, Robert Morris Elgin. In 1869 the Colorado River had a major flood and that is while Elgin exists today. Originally the railroad was to have run 10 miles East of Elgin.
Elgin is 19 scenic miles east of Austin on hwy 290. It is also known as the sausage capital of Texas. Elgin hosts numerous festivals each year, including its most popular, The Hogeye Festival.
