What the Johnson Family Project Does
The Johnson Family project is dedicated to helping families in need, and pulling resources together to clothe, feed, and offer support to those families.
How Families are Chosen
We reach out to our local schools to find out by teachers, and faculty about students that truely have a need. The families of that child are contacted, and offered assistance. All of the families are grateful for the offer, and choose to participate in the Johnson Family Project.
How Was the Johnson Family Project Founded
Began in February 2009 and was founded out of a desire to instill a spirit of gratitude in my young children. My oldest child, 8 yr old Jonathan, had the idea that money was always readily available. This attitude caused him to always seek ways to spend money whether it was available or not. Since I grew up poor, I was constantly telling Jonathan that the activities that he participates in and the toys that he had been given were privileges and blessings that not everyone received. I could tell that he really didn’t understand what that truly meant. I was inspired to contact 2 local elementary schools in an effort to find families who needed assistance in the areas of food, clothes and/or other basic needs. This would allow me to paint a picture to Jonathan about being grateful about the lifestyle he has. Once the families were identified and contacted I rallied my close friends, relatives and Jonathan to contribute the identified necessities to these needy families. In the four months since inception we have raised over $2700 in food, clothes, money and services to assist needy families in our communities. And I am proud to say that during the 2nd month of the project that Jonathan decided that he would wait to purchase a book that he wanted so that he could use his $7.00 to assist one of our families with their monthly mortgage payment. His exact words were “that book can wait because that family needs a place to live and food to eat”.-Written by DeUndra Johnson-
